Ezra understood what Jessie was saying, he did. He’d been with him most of the past week, and most of that time had been spent at home, or on rare occasions, somewhere in pack territory. He didn’t like the thought of being cooped up any more than Jessie did, but the panic that threatened to take over whenever he thought of something happening to Jessie was too strong for him to be able to let it go.

It looked like he was going to, though. Jessie seemed to be convinced of what he was doing, and he was right—he was an adult, and he could make his own decisions. If he decided he wanted to leave pack territory to go get coffee in town, no one could force him not to, not even Ezra.

So the best alternative choice was to go with him.

There was no way Ezra could let him go without him. He’d spend the entire time freaking out and imagining the worst scenarios. He couldn’t forbid Jessie from doing anything, and they might fight if he tried.

He didn’t want to fight. He wanted to be with Jessie for the rest of his life, and things had been going relatively well. He knew Jessie wanted more from him, and he wanted to give it to him, but not while Reddings was out there. He wanted to be relaxed and in love, not anxious and always alert. Jessie hadn’t said anything about it, and Ezra wasn’t sure he’d understand, but he wasn’t pushing, and it was one less thing for Ezra to worry about.

“All right.”

Jessie blinked. “What?”

“You want to get coffee? We’ll go get coffee. I’m coming with you and the others, just like you asked me to.”

“Really?”

Jessie looked so surprised, Ezra started to laugh. “Why did you ask me to go if you didn’t think I’d come?”

“Because you would have freaked out if you’d realized I was gone.”

“That I’d have done. Look, I know this past week has been hard. I understand you can’t stay locked in here all the time, but I want you to put yourself in my place. You know what the worst thing that could happen to me is?”

Jessie nodded. “Losing me. Just like the worst thing that could happen to me is losing you. And Max, but that’s something else.”

“So you understand why I’m so afraid of you going where you won’t be as protected as you are here.”

Jessie stepped closer and took one of Ezra’s hands. “I do, and I wish things were different and that Reddings was still in jail where he belongs, but I can’t let him take any more from me than he already has, Ezra. It was partly because of him that I pushed you away and that we had to spend so many years apart. I’m not saying it was only his fault, because it wasn’t, but it was his words that made me reject what I am and you. I’m not going to let him take away my coffee shop and the life I’ve built.
